Lot 2920
Crispus, Caesar, 316-326. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.62 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri. Irregular mint, after 321. IVL CVISPVS NOB CVES Laureate and cuirassed bust of Crispus to left, seen from behind, holding shield with his left hand. Rev. BHIITH TИΗIIOVILLITIIS / PTR Globe set on altar inscribed V•T/IS / XX; above, three stars. Cr. RIC 308 (for possible prototype). Somewhat rough and the reverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The coin exhibits a distinctly unofficial style, suggesting it is a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. It replicates a Crispus coin from Trier, although the G4 bust was not employed in Trier's standard coinage. It is likely that the official coin it mimicked, possibly Trier RIC 308, featured the G8 bust, while the imitation omitted the spear.
